Steelworker Summer 2022—Safe at home in District 6

USW Local Unions who contribute to the Family & Community Education Fund are encouraged to apply to the Fund with a proposal to hire one or more students in the summer of 2022.

Because pandemic conditions still prevent a Steelworker Summer program based in USW’s Canadian National Office or in the District 6 office, we’re happy to offer a special version of Steelworker Summer for 2022 that allows Steelworker Summer students to work in their home communities for up to 10 weeks (at 35 hours per week).

Local union proposals should include:

  1. Number of students to be hired
  2. A short description of the main work tasks or projects the student(s) will do and any particular skills needed to do that job
  3. Start and end dates of the work
  4. Names and contact information of the local officers who will supervise the student(s) and be the main point of contact with the Fund
  5. Address(es) of where the student(s) will work
  6. What steps the local union will take to ensure their health and safety, given the pandemic

The USW Family & Community Education Fund will fund up to 9 Steelworker Summer student positions within local unions and will pay:

  • A weekly stipend of $650 (gross) for up to 10 weeks’ work (paid directly to each student); modest special project expenses, if requested, may also be paid to support special work project

(The FCEF can also assist local unions in developing project ideas, and will offer short Zoom sessions to hired students to orient them to USW paperwork and on aspects of union work and principles. Other support will be provided, as requested by the local union.)

The student(s) must be:

  • Between the ages of 17-25 (as of the first day of work) AND
  • The children or grandchildren of members or retired members of local unions within reasonable commuting distance of the work AND
  • Returning to high school in the fall or entering/returning to trade school, community college or university after summer 2022 AND
  • Double vaccinated with a booster shot

Local unions can apply by emailing Gabriele Simmons at Applications from local unions will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. Any questions can also be directed to Gabriele or to Anita Bryan, District Coordinator, at
