USW Local 6500 and Vale Base Metals raise over $786,000 for United Way

February 5, 2026

Members of United Steelworkers Local 6500, in partnership with Vale Base Metals, raised $786,400 for the United Way of Northeastern Ontario through their 43rd annual joint fundraising campaign.

The total includes a $350,000 matching contribution from Vale Base Metals and brings the partnership’s cumulative contributions to more than $22 million since 1982, making it the largest and longest-running United Way workplace campaign in Northeastern Ontario.

The campaign concluded with a luncheon in Greater Sudbury, where union members, volunteers and organizers gathered to recognize months of fundraising efforts. Activities throughout the campaign included workplace initiatives, volunteer engagement and friendly fundraising competitions that strengthened solidarity across worksites.

Funds raised support United Way agencies delivering essential programs across the region, including housing supports, food security initiatives, mental health services and emergency outreach. As economic pressures continue to have dramatic impacts on working people and their families, these programs remain a critical lifeline in the community.

USW Local 6500 members have consistently shown that the labour movement is rooted in collective care and responsibility beyond the job site.

“Labour has always been about more than the workplace – it’s about people looking out for one another,” said Kevon Stewart, Director of United Steelworkers District 6 (Ontario and Atlantic Canada). “This campaign reflects the values of our union: solidarity, fairness and a shared commitment to strengthening the communities where our members live and work.”

United Steelworkers District 6 congratulates USW Local 6500, campaign volunteers and all contributors on another successful campaign that demonstrates the lasting impact of union solidarity in action.
