USW salutes the hard work and determination of the Native Women’s Association of Canada (NWAC) and of the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women, who never forgot and never gave up demanding justice.
We have high expectations for the national inquiry. Its recommendations, and resulting government action, must improve the lives and safety of Aboriginal women and girls in real ways.
We are listening to our allies, like NWAC, and we hear their concerns about shortcomings in the design of the inquiry, such as inadequate trauma-informed and culturally based counselling support for families; uncertainty about the role of provinces and territories, which have responsibility for policing and for family/child services; and uncertainty about the ability for families to reopen closed cases. We call on Minister Carolyn Bennett and the federal government to address those concerns.
We will continue to listen to our allies, like NWAC, as more details about the inquiry emerge as it starts its work September 1. It is essential that the inquiry hear the voices of Aboriginal women and families and of Aboriginal women’s organizations.
