During our last International Constitutional Convention in August 2022, delegates passed a resolution to mandate the creation of a Veterans Committee at the local union level. While we recognize that in Canada, not every local union will have veteran members, we want to create space for veteran members to connect and interact with each other at the district level.

The District 6 Veterans of Steel Committee would join current district level committees – Women of Steel, NextGen, Human Rights, Political Action, Steel Pride and SOAR – whose common mandates are to forge solidarity, build power and educate.

We would also like to engage current veteran Steelworkers on how we can advocate for resources that veterans’ communities need and eventually build a strong community outreach to other veterans in the union and communities. As the develop the committee, we would like to connect with you about how we can best help you and other vets within our district.

If you are a current USW member who is veteran and interested in becoming a member of the District 6 Veterans of Steel Committee, please contact Anita Bryan abryan@usw.ca. Each local union member who wishes to participate in any District 6 Committee will need the support of the local union president as all costs, including but not limited to travel, accommodations, lost wages, per diem, are paid exclusively the locals.

In solidarity,
