District 6 appoints Erick Harrison of USW Local 1005 as NextGen co-chair & co-ordinator

District 6 is proud to announce that Erick Harrison of USW Local 1005 is the new co-chair and co-ordinator for the NextGen program. Harrison, known for his deep commitment to empowering and inspiring young workers, is excited to build a stronger, more connected future for young Steelworkers in the district.

Harrison’s journey with NextGen began at his first meeting, where he met Myles Sullivan, the then-District 6 Director. Sullivan shared an impactful message that resonated with Harrison: climbing the union ladder isn’t about reaching the top and stopping – it’s about bringing others with you and continuing to rise together. Harrison reflects, “That moment really stuck with me. It wasn’t just about advancing myself but about lifting others as we move forward. It’s about ensuring the next generation of leaders has the tools and opportunities to succeed.”

Now in his new role, Harrison is dedicated to expanding opportunities for young Steelworkers by continuing to grow the District 6 NextGen Committee. His goal is to create a network that provides mentorship, education, skill development and opportunities for young workers to actively contribute to the union’s work. Harrison believes strongly that young members should not only be inspired to take on leadership roles but also be empowered with the knowledge and tools to lead confidently and effectively.

“I want young workers to know that the union isn’t just a place for the experienced – it’s a place where everyone, no matter their age, has the chance to make a real difference,” Harrison says. “We need to develop leaders who are ready to take on the challenges we face today and in the future.”

One of Harrison’s key priorities is to encourage young workers to reach out to their locals and attend the leadership program offered by the union. “The leadership program provides an invaluable platform for learning, networking and connecting with like-minded activists,” he says. “I encourage every young worker to get involved and take advantage of the training and mentorship available to them. The opportunities are endless when we come together.”

In addition to mentorship and skill-building, Harrison is planning to attend the upcoming co-ordinators’ meeting in December. He is eager to collaborate with other district leaders and to bring back fresh ideas and initiatives to District 6 that will benefit young workers. “I’m looking forward to learning from other co-ordinators and sharing insights that will help our members grow and thrive,” Harrison shares. “This is about all of us working together to build a stronger future.” Harrison is passionate about creating an environment where youth can thrive and make a meaningful impact, from organizing events to expanding educational programs that focus on leadership and union activism.

Under Harrison’s leadership, the District 6 NextGen program will continue to be a vital space for young members to develop leadership skills, build connections and ensure that the labour movement remains strong and resilient for future generations. Harrison is determined to make sure that young Steelworkers not only have a seat at the table but are empowered to lead the conversation and act on the issues that matter most to them.

“We have an incredible opportunity to shape the future of our union and the labour movement as a whole,” Harrison concludes. “By working together, we can achieve great things and make sure our voices are heard. We’re in this together and we’ll continue to move forward, stronger than ever.”

Harrison’s vision is clear: provide the next generation of union leaders with the support and resources they need to succeed and key pushing forward together. With the guiding principles of lifting others as we rise, he is confident that the young Steelworkers will continue to shape the future of the union and labour movement.
