Jeunes musiciens du monde : Harnessing the power of music
In Abitibi-Témiscamingue, in northwestern Quebec, music is much more than an art form – it has become a powerful source of hope for young Anicinabek people. Thanks to Jeunes musiciens du monde (JMM, Young Musicians of the World in English), these youths are building a future full of possibilities through music education, workshops, and personalized support.
A long-time partner of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF), JMM has been leading the Fund’s first major initiative with an Indigenous community in Canada since 2016. This program supports children from daycare through high school, offering a unique educational and cultural learning journey.
Last spring, a delegation from District 5 of the Steelworkers Union travelled to the town of Val-d’Or and the communities of Lac-Simon and Kitcisakik to witness firsthand the progress and lasting impact of the project.
They took part in musical activities, exchanged with community members and the JMM team, and discussed outcomes, challenges, and future plans.
The delegation members left deeply inspired, having witnessed the positive change made possible by the SHF’s support – a support that brings hope and new perspectives to a community still affected by the legacy of colonialism and systemic racism.
Over the past eight years, this partnership has enabled hundreds of young Anicinabek to strengthen their self-esteem, nurture their dreams, and envision a better future.
