Duration: 15 – 20 minutes, depending on number of questions asked.
Number of people who can take part: at least 8; no maximum.
Learning objective: demonstrate and deepen knowledge of USW, union, and social justice concepts as a team while also demonstrating agility.
Materials needed: definitions list; pylons, tape, markers, and large cue cards to write out concepts; soccer ball for each team; a microphone and sound system if it’s a large group; flip chart/paper to record teams’ scores; prizes
Before your event:
1. Prepare a definitions list based on what you think would be of particular interest to your participants or ask the Fund Coordinator to help you create one.
2. Write out the concepts on large cue cards in large writing that’s easy to see from a distance.
3. Decide who will host the game. Read over the definitions in advance so you’re comfortable with the material.
4. Prepare the game space – tape one concept cue card to each pylon, evenly spacing the pylons in a distanced half circle. Create a starting line in front of the pylon half circle and behind it some distance away, mark out goal posts.
At your event:
1. Divide your participants into teams, 4 people/team minimum.
2. Place them behind the starting line.
3. Read out the rules.
4. Read out the first question!
5. Award prizes to the team with the most correct answers.
Rules:
1. Each team picks their order of players and lines up behind the starting line, across from the half circle of pylons.
2. The host calls out the first definition to all teams, e.g. “the legal process where a labor union and an employer negotiate a contract that covers the terms and conditions of employment.”
3. The first player of each team must run to the pylon with the corresponding term, dribble their ball around the pylon, and shoot their ball through the goal posts. Based on the example question above, the correctly labeled pylon would read ‘Collective Bargaining.’
4. The host awards one point to the first team that got the answer correct and their ball through the goal posts.
5. The host calls out the second question to all teams and the process repeats.
