Duration: 15 – 20 minutes, or up to 20 questions can be asked and then participants must guess their labels
Number of people who can take part: at least 5; no maximum
Learning objective: demonstrate and deepen knowledge of USW, union, and social justice concepts while getting to know other activists
Materials needed: tape, markers, and cue cards to write out participants’ labels; a microphone and sound system if it’s a large group; prizes; flip chart [optional]
Before your event:
1. Think about who will be coming to your event and how much they know about our union, social justice and labour concepts.
2. Prepare participants’ labels based on the list supplied – add any we’ve missed/that would be of particular interest to your participants!
At your event:
1. Tape one participant label on the back of each participant, making sure each cannot see their own.
2. Read out the instructions.
3. Yell “Start!”
4. Stay nearby to help any participants stuck on what questions to ask/unsure of the concepts outlined in the participant labels.
5. Award prizes to the first person who successfully guesses their label and to those asking good questions and helping others out!
Rules:
1. Each participant must have a label they HAVE NOT seen taped onto their back.
2. Participants walk around, asking each other yes/no questions to try to identify what they are labeled as. Others can see what is on your back, but you cannot see what’s on your own, e.g. you can ask Player B “Is my label a position on an executive board?” and Player B can look at your label and answer yes or no. As you ask more questions, you gather more information to make an educated guess as to your label.
- Ask broad questions! As you narrow down the possibilities, begin to ask more specific ones. State your guess once you feel you’re sure.
- Once game organizers confirm a participant is right, the participant can keep playing and helping others guess their concepts.
3. Game is done after 15-20 minutes of play, or when 20 questions are asked by each person, resulting in each guessing their labels to the wider group!
Facilitator Tips:
If you are using labels from different categories, colour code each one based on its category, e.g. all social justice labels are blue, all USW labels are red. Write a legend for what colour corresponds with each category on a flipchart paper and have each participant wear a dot that matches the colour of their label. This will make it easier for participants guessing their labels.
