HAMILTON – The United Steelworkers union today endorsed Monique Taylor, the Ontario NDP candidate in the Hamilton East—Stoney Creek by-election on Sept. 3.
“She’s always been a champion for workers and a friend of labour. We can count on her to fight for us. The Steelworkers are proud to endorse Monique Taylor and the Ontario NDP in the Hamilton East–Stoney Creek by-election,” said Kevon Stewart, United Steelworkers union (USW) District 6 Director (Ontario and Atlantic Canada).
Monique Taylor was born and raised in Hamilton’s east end. She was a fighter for people here for 14 years as a Member of Provincial Parliament.
“What an opportunity we have to send Monique back to Queen’s Park alongside Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles,” he said.
Steelworkers have a proud tradition of supporting the Ontario NDP. The union was a founder of the NDP along with the Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) in 1961.
“We know Monique is a champion for workers and labour rights. She will do what it takes to continue her impressive track record of advocating for mental health, for autism services for families, for stronger child protection. These are all things Steelworkers care about,” said Stewart.
Marit Stiles and Monique Taylor have been on the picket lines multiple times supporting striking members of USW Local 7135 who are on the streets to get a fair deal at National Steel Car.
“USW members know that only the NDP is the party for working people. Monique will stand with workers and strengthen labour rights,” said Stewart. “We have seen firsthand the determination and passion Monique brings to her role as an MPP. Her 14 years of dedicated service to Hamilton shows she’s the only candidate who will represent the people of Hamilton East–Stoney Creek with the strong voice they deserve,” Stewart added.
