TORONTO, 19 February 2015 – The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $5,000 to Oxfam Canada to help families and communities recover from flooding in Mozambique.
Heavy rains starting in early January in central and northern provinces of Mozambique have caused significant flooding. Over 71,000 families have had their agricultural fields affected, the majority of which come from the Zambézia province – causing an increase of up to 21% in food prices within more isolated districts in the province.
Oxfam supports ongoing programs in Mozambique and to help victims recover from the flooding it is providing support for access to clean water, sanitation and shelter.
“Flooding has caused real financial strain and hardship to families, many of whom lost their homes as well as produce and crops in fields. The Steelworkers Humanity Fund wants to assist them in the recovery,” said Ken Neumann, Steelworkers Humanity Fund President.
Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses primarily on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries, but also supports Canadian communities in crisis. United Steelworkers (USW) members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions.
