A message to District 3 members as we close out 2025

December 22, 2025
Scott Lunny

Dear friends,

As we close out 2025, it’s clear that this has been a year of significant challenges, hard fights and real victories across our District.

We took on a lot this year. There were many struggles and many successes. Tariffs, trade disputes and the chaos and uncertainty driven by Trump dominated far too much of our time. And that uncertainty continues.

For our members in the forest sector, steel, manufacturing and other industries, please know this: your union stepped up at every level, on both sides of the border, to fight back. We fought for your jobs, for your industries and for our country.

This year was also marked by loss. We mourned the passing of former International President Leo W. Gerard. Leo was a true Steelworker and a giant of the labour movement in Canada, the United States and around the world. His leadership and legacy will never be forgotten and he will be deeply missed.

Alongside that loss, there were important positives in 2025. We elected a smart, passionate and inspiring new International President — my friend and colleague, Roxanne Brown. I am truly looking forward to being sworn in with Roxanne and the rest of the International Executive Board on March 1.

Here in District 3, we negotiated literally hundreds of collective agreements. We secured first contracts, renewals and when necessary, took strike action. We won strikes at StellerVista Credit Union (USW Local 1-405) and Rogers Communications (USW Local 1944) and we continue to fight for a fair collective agreement at La-kwa sa muqw Forestry LP (USW Local 1-1937) on Vancouver Island.

These victories and the fights still underway happened because of solidarity.

Solidarity when we stood shoulder to shoulder with bargaining committees.

Solidarity when we walked the picket line.

Solidarity when Steelworkers showed up together at Pride events.

Solidarity when we came together at the National Gathering for Indigenous Steelworkers, hosted by District 3 in Winnipeg.

Solidarity every time we come together as woodworkers, miners, baristas, health-care workers, office workers and steelworkers, advocating for better for one another, for our families and for our communities.

Our collective strength is what makes the United Steelworkers strong.

It’s what makes us a family.

As we head into the holiday season, I want to wish every member of our District 3 Steelworker family a happy and safe break. Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, or simply enjoy a festive glass of eggnog, I hope you are able to spend time with friends, family and community.

Celebrate, rest and have a very Happy New Year. Then be ready to stand together with Steelworkers across North America as we take on 2026 — united, determined and strong.

In solidarity,

Scott Lunny
USW District 3 Director
