The United Steelworkers (USW) District 6 is relieved to hear that everyone involved in Monday’s bus incident is safe.
We have been informed that a collision occurred involving an Alouette bus with students on board. While details, including the cause of the incident, are still being confirmed, this situation raises serious concerns about the use of replacement drivers during the ongoing labour dispute.
“Our first priority is always the safety of the children,” said Stephanie Gunson, President of USW Local 2020. “Our members know these routes, they know the students, and they take that responsibility seriously every single day.”
School bus drivers play a critical role in ensuring safe and reliable transportation, built on experience, training and familiarity with the routes and communities they serve.
“This is what happens when employers choose to undermine skilled, experienced unionized workers instead of reaching a fair agreement,” said Kevon Stewart, USW District 6 Director. “You cannot replace that experience overnight without consequences. Our members are fighting for fair wages, respect, and the standards that help keep services like student transportation safe.”
USW Local 2020 members have been on strike for over a month and continue to call on Alouette Bus Lines and the consortium to return to the bargaining table and reach a fair agreement.
Student safety must remain the top priority.
