United Steelworkers members at Delta Airlines negotiate industry-leading pay rates

December 8, 2023

United Steelworkers (USW) union members working at Delta Airlines operations in Canada have negotiated a new collective agreement providing industry-leading compensation, among other gains.

The three-year collective agreement covers some 300 members of USW Local 1976 who work in above-wing and below-wing jobs at Delta Airlines operations in Vancouver, Winnipeg, Toronto and Montreal. Local 1976 members work in positions including ticket and gate agents, baggage handlers and ramp workers.

The new contract will see compensation levels rise by 14% over three years, including total wage increases of 12%. The agreement also includes a new retirement benefit to supplement employees’ defined-benefit pension plan, valued at a further 2% of wages.

Additional adjustments to wage scales will provide many workers with total wage increases as high as 17.5% over the contract’s term. Other gains in the contact include benefits and pension improvements.

“This agreement puts our members at a top-of-scale salary level that is superior to our competitors and provides other significant improvements,” said Manuel D’Souza, Vice-President of USW Local 1976. “It makes these Delta employees the highest-paid in the industry – higher than their counterparts at American Airlines and Air Canada.”

The new collective agreement was ratified by Local 1976 members on Nov. 29.
