In April, amid tariffs and trade threats, over 3,000 Steelworkers from across Canada and the U.S. gathered for our International Constitutional Convention, the democratic Parliament of our union.
I was proud to see our District 3 delegation actively participating, speaking up and ensuring Western and Northern Canadian voices were heard. The 2025 International Convention was a powerful reminder of our collective strength and our duty to leave our union stronger than we found it. We have an obligation to keep our union going and we did that by coming together for working people on both sides of the border and around the globe.
USW members in our district live our mission every day. They serve as shop stewards, safety reps, bargaining committee members, local executives and committees and delegates to conferences, conventions, labour councils and labour federations. Their work strengthens our union, improves the lives and builds a better future for families and communities.
These are uncertain times, but we’re facing the challenges head-on. We’ve stood unequivocally against unfair U.S. tariffs and lobbied hard for industrial strategies that protect our jobs and grow our economy.
We’re making progress in the provincial legislatures in Victoria, Winnipeg and Regina. We’ve pushed governments to support Canadian-made products, protect local jobs and pass legislation that puts workers first. And we’re not letting up. We will hold governments accountable, demand they listen to Steelworkers and act in our interests.
At the bargaining table, we remain united and determined to fight for better wages, better working conditions and strong new contracts.
As we head into summer and approach Labour Day, let’s take pride in all we’ve built together. For decades, USW members have fought for fairness, good jobs and a better future. That’s the fight we continue today for our industries, provinces and country.
Together, we are making a difference.
