According to recent Canadian research, one in six people who menstruate do not know whether they can afford the products they need for their next period, highlighting the ongoing need for initiatives like Period Promise, a United Way campaign. Through their annual collection of menstrual hygiene products and essential personal care items, the United Steelworkers (USW) District 6 and its Women of Steel (WOS) Committee is helping address period poverty while advocating for dignity and menstrual equity.
The campaign brings together Steelworkers from across the district to support women and gender-diverse people experiencing financial hardship, demonstrating that solidarity extends beyond the workplace and into the community.
District 6 Director Kevon Stewart recognized the District 6 Women of Steel Committee’s leadership and continued advocacy.
“The Women of Steel Committee continues to lead by example, advocating for workers and communities while putting our union values into action. Their commitment to campaigns like Period Promise reflects the strength of solidarity and the difference Steelworkers make when we come together.”
District 6 Women of Steel Co-ordinator Anita Bryan emphasized the importance of continuing to advocate for women.
“No one should have to choose between purchasing menstrual products and meeting their basic needs. By supporting Period Promise, we are breaking the stigma around period poverty while standing up for fairness, dignity and equality for all women.”
Accepting the donation on behalf of United Way Greater Toronto, Jackie Taylor, a member of United Steelworkers Local 9042 and Labour Liaison for United Way Greater Toronto, welcomed the contribution.
“The support of the District as well as the District 6 Women of Steel Committee helps women living in poverty and shines a light on an issue that too often goes unseen. We hope more unions will join these initiatives and continue building a movement that supports women and strengthens our communities.”
Through initiatives like Period Promise, the United Way and the District 6 Women of Steel Committee continue to show that advocacy, compassion and solidarity can create meaningful change.
