Empowering union leaders through knowledge and solidarity

In 2024, the union achieved significant progress in leadership development through focused training programs for our members. These initiatives gave members the skills to advocate for themselves and support their local unions more effectively.

Facilitator training

In August, 94 members applied for the Facilitator Training Course, with 16 applicants selected for a five-day, intensive program. This training course prepared members to learn how to bring their critical thinking and engagement into their work. Participants gained practical knowledge and left with increased confidence to assist co-workers and promote positive change.

“Facilitating these courses helps to empower others to advocate for themselves and their co-workers,” said Anton Barbuto of Local 9343.

Financial officer training

Local financial officers, trustees and other members attended a five-day Financial Officer Training Course in November. The program covered essential skills such as managing local union ledgers, auditing, expense reporting and budgeting. This course emphasized the importance of understanding how dues support union operations and strengthen accountability.

As Tara Hart of Local 5319 noted, “Knowledge is power. The more we educate ourselves, the stronger we become. Together, we can build a foundation for lasting change.”

Looking ahead

The District 6 Spring School is set for May 11-16, 2025, at Living Water Resort in Collingwood, Ont. Courses offered will include Arbitration, Prepare and Present, Stewards in Action III, and Bargaining to Win. The choice of venue, where workers are represented by USW, reflects the union’s commitment to solidarity and mutual support.

“Over the years, so many union members have supported me. Now it’s my turn to give back – to share that knowledge and empower my fellow members,” said Curt Campbell of Local 8782.

Commitment to growth

These training programs demonstrate the union’s dedication to equipping members with the tools needed for effective leadership. Each session builds on the union’s strength, fostering a brighter, united future.
