Special events

Bell Island conference activity (Tuesday, July 9 or Wednesday, July 10)

USW District 6 is excited to give you the opportunity to experience beautiful Bell Island. We are sure you will enjoy the USW’s rich history at the Bell Island underground mine, the beauty of St. John’s and learn more about the Newfoundland and Labrador way of life.

In order to accomplish this for all attendees, the event will be held over two days. One group will experience Bell Island on Tuesday, July 9 and the other group will experience the island on Wednesday, July 10. You will attend workshops at the Delta Hotel on your alternate day. Unfortunately, guests are not permitted on Bell Island due to capacity.

The process below is important due to the timing and transportation required to get to the island and go through the scheduled conference activities. Below is the schedule for both Tuesday and Wednesday. Attendees will receive a coloured wristband or lanyard specific for the day’s group. Your selection for the day’s conference activities MUST be made at the time you register.

• Buses will be provided for pickup at the Delta Hotel only at 7:30 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
• Buses will transport attendees to the ferry crossing where they will be taken to the island. It is approximately a 20-minute ferry ride.
• Activities for attendees include:
– USW solidarity event
– USW mine tour
– Museum tour and driving tour
– Wharf experience and Dick’s restaurant
– Traditional Newfoundland and Labrador lunch
• Buses will be provided for pickup to return attendees to the ferry and back to the Delta Hotel, which is anticipated to be mid-afternoon.

Workshops and Rally in the Alley (Tuesday, July 9 or Wednesday, July 10)

This occurs on the day that you are not scheduled to participate in the Bell Island conference activity.

Workshop attendees will be provided lunch and dinner before participating in a night on George Street for the exciting “Rally in the Alley.” This is an organized conference activity with three different venues and will include drink tickets, singing, dancing and a screech-in.

When completing the information online, we ask that you make your selections which cannot be changed after submitting your registration. If you have a special circumstance, please contact District 6 Co-ordinator Anita Bryan, 416-243-8792 x1223.
