The Steelworkers Humanity Fund was officially formed in 1986 as the union’s way to turn solidarity into action, at home and around the world. By encouraging local unions to negotiate solidarity contributions into their collective agreements, Steelworker activists created a long-lasting tool for social change.
Today, thousands of Steelworker members contribute a penny (or more) to the fund for every hour worked. And just as there is strength in numbers, the sum of these contributions has allowed the Steelworkers Humanity Fund to support dozens of partners in Canada and around the world. The SHF has played a key role in providing emergency relief in the aftermath of natural and human-made disasters, advancing programs to tackle the root causes of inequality, engaging members around international solidarity campaigns, and supporting advocacy on issues affecting working people worldwide.
Over the past 40 years, the SHF has cemented itself as a critical tool for the USW to build ties of solidarity with workers and communities around the globe. We will be celebrating our 40th anniversary on June 26, 2026 with music, a cash bar, dancing, and a chance to (re)connect with SHF friends and allies from across its history.
Join us on June 26 at 7pm to celebrate four decades of solidarity and to strengthen our collective resolve for many more!
The SHF 40th Anniversary Celebration will be held from 7-10pm on June 26 at the United Steelworkers Hall at 25 Cecil Street, Toronto, Ontario. The building is fully wheelchair accessible. Paid parking is available nearby. The events will be bilingual with French-English interpretation provided throughout.
