A steel worker in full safety gear working in front of a blast furnace.

The USW will be gathering Steel sector local union leaders, workplace representatives and staff together from across Canada for the next edition of the Stand up for Steel Conference, taking place in Ottawa from June 3 to 4.

For many years, the union pushed for four key demands:

1. Ensure unions have the right to initiate trade cases
2. Expand the definition of ‘material injury’ in trade cases
3. Establish a carbon border adjustment on imported steel
4. Demand the use of Canadian-made steel in infrastructure projects

Thanks to the efforts of the union – including numerous local union leaders who brought forward the stories of members at trade hearings, together we were successful in April 2022 in winning both the right to initiate trade cases and an expansion of the definition of “material injury” in trade cases. This now includes harm to job security, impact on collective bargaining outcomes and on the broader community.

Now it is time to focus in on these next two demands that will bolster the use of Canadian-made steel, which is among the cleanest in the world: establish a carbon border adjustment to help mitigate the prevalence of “leakage” from low cost, pollution-heavy jurisdictions and securing the use of Canadian-made steel in infrastructure projects.
