Mark Morgan
Warehouse Inventory Control Co-ordinator, Simplot Canada
Local 9074, District 3Portage la Prairie, Man.
With 22 years under his belt, Mark has more seniority than the USW does at Simplot Canada. The potato company supplies McDonald’s, Burger King, Sysco and others with hash browns, fries, tater tots and other potato products.
“Two million pounds a day come in and get shipped out,” says Mark, who makes sure the product shipped matches the orders placed.
Mark got involved with the union when it started in 2005, signing up shift-mates when other Simplot locations were organizing. At the time, workers were frustrated by unfair treatment.
Since then, he’s been a Shop Steward, Unit Grievor and Unit Chair. He is also Vice-President of the amalgamated local union and facilitates numerous health and safety and steward courses.
After years of involvement, Mark was ready to walk away. Then, two years ago, when asked to facilitate at District 3 Summer School, his union passion was revived. “You are the union. Learn what you can do. Go to meetings. Know your rights,” advises Mark.
