The Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council and its local unions presented cheques to its many community partners serving the Hamilton/Burlington, Brantford, Simcoe and Fort Erie areas, totalling over $27,000.

“We try to be more than just worker representatives in the communities we work and live in, we believe that we can and do make a difference. The holiday season is a time for giving and we and our locals have been working all year long so that we can make this time of year special for those who struggle day to day to get by,” said Darren Green, Area Council President.

Those receiving a donation from the Hamilton Steelworkers were Wesley Urban Ministries, the Brantford and Simcoe Food Banks, Hamilton Food Share and St. Matthew’s House.

In addition, the Women of Steel Committee has been doing raffles and held a toy drive for St. Matthew’s house, with proceeds and toys presented at the meeting.

“Most of our workers are doing well because they belong to a union but they recognize the hardship facing many in our community. They feel a need to take care of those less fortunate,” said Tom Walsh, Hamilton Steelworkers Area Coordinator.

Hamilton Steelworkers believe that “Community Matters,” said Green, “and this is just one of the many ways we show it.”
