A statement from the United Steelworkers union on International Human Rights Day 2025
The United Steelworkers union (USW) recognizes International Human Rights Day this December 10. First marked on December 10, 1948, by the United Nations General Assembly, this year’s theme is Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials.
This year’s theme is a strong affirmation that human rights are workers’ rights and are essential to all of us in our daily lives. For the Steelworkers, human rights are rooted in the dignity of a healthy and safe workplace, both physically and mentally; decent work and equal pay; protection from harassment and discrimination; and the freedom to choose to be a union member.
Human rights is a collective struggle. USW members take on human rights work every day, in various ways, in our local unions, our area councils, at the district and national levels of our union and in our communities. Over the years, Steelworkers have proudly won human rights gains in collective agreements, activism, education, advocacy and government lobbying.
This year’s campaign theme emphasizes that human rights are positive, essential and attainable. As human rights work continues to evolve and as we all navigate a changing world, our work in human rights must protect our gains while also seeking improvements in many areas.
