Steelworkers Humanity Fund Contributes $10,000 for New Brunswick Ice Storm

February 7, 2017

BATHURST, N.B. – The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $10,000 to local food banks in the Acadian Peninsula to assist communities ravaged by the Jan. 24-25, 2017 ice storm. Many residents in the region had to endure more than a week without power.

“The Humanity Fund is pleased to be able to respond to the appeal for support from Steelworkers in the Tracadie region. All Steelworkers and Canadians are moved by the hardship the citizens of this community had to endure,” said Ken Neumann, Steelworkers Humanity Fund President and National Director of the United Steelworkers (USW).

“We are proud to say the Steelworkers Humanity Fund’s contribution will be provided to the Au Rayon d’Espoir food bank in Tracadie, and distributed throughout the region,” said Marty Warren, USW District 6 Director (Ontario and Atlantic Region).

The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that contributes to development projects and emergency aid in developing countries, as well as supporting Canadian communities in crisis. United Steelworkers members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions to the fund.
