Re: IWA Online Archive – Western Canadian Lumberworker Newspaper, 1960-1980
On Friday, April 26, the Kaatza Museum IWA Archives announced the creation of a new online archive of IWA history on the British Columbia History Digitization Program platform called ARCA. The new ARCA site is now a repository for digitized copies of the Western Canadian Lumber Worker newspaper from 1960 to 1980. This newspaper, circulated within the ranks of union members working in the forest industry, was the voice of the Western Canadian Regional Council of the IWA for many years. The ARCA site provides open access to anyone researching historical IWA material between 1960 and 1980 in a word-searchable format.
Thanks to the British Columbia History Digitization Program, whose annual funding program funds ARCA, a good chunk of our historical union newspapers are now available online. There is more to come as the Kaatza Museum is currently scanning and uploading the earlier versions of the BC Lumber Worker starting in 1938. We hope to have earlier versions of the BC Lumber Worker uploaded to the repository by the fall.
I am offering this information because I want to share this historical repository and make Wood Council local unions aware of this treasure trove of historical information. In this way, Wood Council locals can share a bit of their past with current members and shine a light on the work of the Kaatza Museum in making the IWA archives more accessible to the public.
Here is the link on the ARCA website to the BC/Western Canadian Lumber Worker: The digitized B.C./Western Canadian Lumber Worker collection contains newspapers produced from 1960 to 1980 by the British Columbia District Council No. 1 and the Western Canada Regional Council No. 1 of the forestry labour union the International Woodworkers of America (I.W.A.). https://bchdp.arcabc.ca/islandora/object/ksma%3Awclw
Please share this widely with your members and anyone else who may be interested.
