October 4 is the day Canadians attend vigils and other events honouring missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls. Sadly, included in the missing and murdered are Steelworker sisters and the family members of Steelworkers.
2016 is the eleventh year in a row that we have marked this important commemoration. But, for a change, we can approach it with some hope.
The national inquiry into missing and murdered Indigenous women began work on September 1. Like you, I have high expectations. I want the inquiry commission to provide the resources and other arrangements so that families and Aboriginal women’s organizations can participate fully and safely. And I want the inquiry to make smart recommendations for change in our country’s institutions and ways of doing things, recommendations that our politicians act on without delay.
We can best honour the missing and murdered by making sure that Aboriginal women and girls live full and safe lives.
Please attend an October 4 event in your community. Look at the list below, compiled by the Native Women’s Association of Canada, or check listings in your home town or city.
In solidarity,
Ken Neumann
National Director
