TORONTO – In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Lebanon, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund (SHF) is donating $20,000 to Oxfam Canada to support urgent relief efforts for civilians displaced by the ongoing conflict.
Since the conflict began on March 2, more than one million civilians – approximately one fifth of Lebanon’s population – have been forced from their homes following evacuation warnings issued to residents of at least 53 villages and densely populated areas in Southern Lebanon. Lebanese authorities report that at least 886 people have been killed in Israeli airstrikes, including 98 children, according to the World Health Organization.
This crisis is unfolding in a region where nearly 60 million people already rely on humanitarian aid, and further escalation risks mass additional displacement and increased pressure on already strained local systems.
The SHF’s contribution will support Oxfam Canada’s humanitarian response in shelters across Mount Lebanon, the South, and the Bekaa, providing displaced families with essential items such as bedding, hygiene and menstrual health kits, and clean water.
“The USW stands in solidarity with refugees in Lebanon who are fleeing this terrible conflict,” said Marty Warren, United Steelworkers union National Director and President of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund. “The Canadian government must continue to take action to prevent an escalation of violence which could result in an all-out war with even more dire consequences for the entire region.”
Anyone wishing to support relief efforts can donate through the OXFAM Canada Crisis in the Middle East Appeal or the Humanitarian Coalition Middle East Emergency Appeal.
Founded in 1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization focused on international development and emergency assistance, while also supporting communities across Canada. Contributions come primarily from USW members through collective agreement provisions, with some employers matching these contributions.
