At USW Local 2918, one small conversation turned into real change – and it all started with the Women of Steel (WOS).
After hearing concerns about the lack of access to feminine hygiene products at IMT Precision, newly elected WOS Chair Samantha Campbell took action to address these underlying issues in the workplace. She spoke with women across the plant and drafted a thoughtful, detailed proposal to bring the issue forward. In a July 3rd meeting with management, Samantha presented the case for change.
Just two weeks later, the company’s agreement marked a significant victory for workplace equity. Starting Aug. 11, workers will see new dispensers and stocked containers in all women’s and co-ed bathrooms at IMT.
“For me, this change is about comfort, dignity and ending the stigma around menstruation,” said Campbell. “Periods aren’t a choice, and women should feel comfortable asking for help without shame. Until now, there was only one product in the bathroom, and it was a coin dispenser – most of us don’t carry coins anymore. Some members have medical conditions like endometriosis, and new employees need to know they have easy, confidential access to what they need so they can focus on their work. Having free products in every bathroom is a small change that makes a big impact.”
Campbell hopes the initiative inspires others to raise issues in their workplaces. “Don’t be afraid to speak up. This is about women’s rights and human rights,” she said. “Our employers are more willing to work with us than we think. When we bring ideas forward, we can create a better environment for everyone.”
This win is more than a supply issue – it’s about dignity, inclusion and being heard. It also reflects a stronger relationship between the union and the company. What once might have been ignored was not only heard but embraced.
USW District 6 Director Kevon Stewart celebrated the achievement. “This is a textbook example of how Women of Steel drive real, meaningful change. Samantha and the committee saw a problem, built a solution and made it happen – through solidarity and leadership.”
Anita Bryan, District 6 Women of Steel Co-ordinator, agreed. “The WOS team at Local 2918 stepped with care, courage and clarity. Their actions don’t just support women in their workplace – they set the bar for others across the labour movement.”
USW District 6 is proud of the work Local 2918 has done within their labour community, and this type of advocacy work is just the beginning. Members within our union at USW are encouraged to get involved in other committees, such as Human Rights, NextGen, Joint Health and Safety, Political Action, and Steel Pride.
When we unite our voices, we have the power to create positive change – for everyone.
