The United Steelworkers union (USW) joins the people of Manitoba in mourning the loss of Nello Altomare, Manitoba’s Minister of Education and Childhood Learning, who passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.

“Nello Altomare was a dedicated public servant and a strong ally to workers and families across Manitoba,” said Scott Lunny, USW Western Canada Director. “On behalf of the United Steelworkers, we extend our heartfelt condolences to Nello’s family, friends and all who were touched by his life. His legacy will continue to inspire our commitment to building a better Manitoba for all workers and their families.”

“Nello was more than a minister; he was a friend to the Steelworkers and a true champion of the labour movement,” said USW Manitoba Area Co-ordinator Mike Pulak. “Nello had an open-door policy and always made time to listen and support us. His commitment to public education and his unwavering support for workers and families earned him the admiration and respect of many.”

Before his election in 2019 to represent Winnipeg’s Transcona riding, Altomare served as a school principal, where he was a passionate advocate for education and building stronger communities. As a proud New Democrat, he worked tirelessly to create opportunities and improve the lives of children and families across the province.

“The USW honours Nello’s memory and his commitment to the principles of fairness, equality and progress. His spirit will remain a guiding force in our fight for a stronger Manitoba for all,” said Pulak.
