More than 600 Canadian labour activists meeting in Toronto for United Steelworkers union’s national conference

April 24, 2023

TORONTO– More than 600 members and allies of the United Steelworkers union (USW) from across Canada will meet this week in Toronto for the USW National Policy Conference.

Hundreds of elected USW delegates will be joined by dozens of national and international guests under the conference banner “Engage, Mobilize, Organize.” To be held at the Sheraton Centre Toronto in the city’s downtown core, the four-day conference begins Tuesday, April 25.

The USW National Policy Conference is normally held every three years and is the largest gathering of Canadian Steelworkers. The conference was initially scheduled for 2022, but was delayed by one year due to pandemic-related issues.

“Throughout the pandemic, our members and millions of other working-class Canadians kept the economy running while persevering through unprecedented challenges and sacrifices,” said Marty Warren, USW National Director for Canada.

“Our grassroots activists from across Canada are coming together this week to set the agenda for our union for the next three years, and to confront challenges including high inflation, corporate profiteering and anti-union attacks from governments and business alike,” said Warren, who assumed the USW Canadian leadership last March.

Proceedings will open Tuesday at 9 a.m., in the Sheraton Centre’s Grand Ball Room, with Warren delivering the conference’s keynote address.

Guest speakers will include federal NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, Canadian Labour Congress President Bea Bruske, USW International President Thomas M. Conway, Toronto Star Work and Wealth investigative reporter Sara Mojtehedzadeh and numerous other guests.

Updates from the proceedings will be made available daily at www.usw.ca. A daily photo collection will be available on Flickr.

Each year, thousands of workers choose to join the USW because of our strong track record in creating healthier, safer and more respectful workplaces and negotiating better working conditions and fairer compensation – including good wages, benefits and pensions.
