Optimism, gratitude and pride in our union

March 1, 2022

Statement from Myles Sullivan, USW District 6 Director

Dear Steelworkers,

Today I would like to share thoughts of optimism, gratitude and tremendous pride in our great union.

At an installation ceremony this morning for United Steelworkers’ international officers in Pittsburgh, I was sworn in as Director of USW District 6 and officially became a member of our union’s International Executive Board. I joined other USW District Directors and Executive Officers in swearing a solemn oath to serve the best interests of our international union and our entire membership in Canada, the United States and the Caribbean.

This is an honour and a responsibility I could never have imagined when I joined the Steelworkers more than a quarter-century ago after beginning a job at a mining company in Northern Ontario. To each and every one of you, our members throughout Ontario and Atlantic Canada, I pledge to work tirelessly every day to earn the trust you have placed in me as director of the largest district in our international union.

My commitment to you is to work together to strengthen the foundation of our union and build on the USW’s incredible legacy of defending the rights and interests of our members and all working people.

Together, we will continue to support and empower our grassroots members and activists through our unmatched Steelworkers’ member-to-member education and training programs.

Together, we will continue to build power through collective bargaining and organizing, and by expanding our USW committees and initiatives aimed at achieving real progress in political action, diversity, human rights, equity and women’s issues.

Together, we will continue to build power by developing our national and global labour solidarity alliances.

The unwavering commitment of Steelworkers to lead the fight for workers’ rights fuels my optimism that our union is ready to confront the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. I know this optimism is shared by our International President Tom Conway and our Canadian leadership team – National Director Marty Warren, District 3 (Western Canada and the Territories) Director Scott Lunny and District 5 (Quebec) Director Dominic Lemieux.

I encourage all of you, my fellow Steelworkers, to get involved. Get involved in your union, in your communities, in political action. Your union will be there to support you. Together, we will build a better future for our members and all workers.

In solidarity,

Myles Sullivan
Director
USW District 6
