Local union members raise their voices and stand up for their beliefs, in all areas of their lives, from the union hall to city hall. Increasingly, Steelworkers are using the Family and Community Education Fund (FCEF) as a tool to enhance this activism and champion their causes of choice. From the summer of 2023 to winter 2024, the FCEF received 92 project submissions. These applications outlined creative activities meant to increase member and community engagement in the union and in social justice efforts.
Initiatives varied across our three districts. In District 3, we saw meaningful activities such as a Labour Day community barbecue organized by Local 7884 Women of Steel Committee members. We saw creative initiatives such as a workshop for activists from amalgamated local unions in District 5 on how best to mobilize their members, and a senior citizen engagement series from Local 1-306 in District 6.
In total, we distributed $1,523,180.37 to locals, committees and area councils that applied for FCEF funding to lead such engaging and educational events.
