Honouring the Power and Place of Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit Persons (MMIWG2S)

Indigenous women are four to six times more likely than non-Indigenous women to be victims of violence.

Indigenous women make up 16 percent of all female homicide victims and 11 percent of missing women, yet Indigenous people make up only 4.3 percent of the population of Canada.

And Indigenous people who identify as Two-Spirit persons face especially high rates of violence, due to homophobia and transphobia.

Steelworkers stand in solidarity with missing Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit persons, their families and survivors. We demand justice and support all those taking action to end the genocide against Indigenous women, girls, and Two-Spirit persons.

We endeavour to be strong allies in this epidemic.

Wear a red dress pin to display the symbol of MMIWG2S and join commemorative events in your community. Events are often held on:

• February 14 (a memorial day to remember MMIWG2S),

• May 5 (Red Dress Day or National Day of Awareness of MMIWG2S);

• October 4 (National Day of Action for MMIWG2S)
