JOB POSTING – STAFF REPRESENTATIVE, LEGISLATIVE & PUBLIC POLICY

District 3 of The United Steelworkers seeks a permanent Staff Representative responsible for legislative and public policy issues in western and northern Canada, including British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Territories.

The successful applicant will be responsible for designing and assisting with provincial lobbying and political campaigns supporting the Union’s legislative agenda. This includes but is not limited to trade (including Softwood Lumber and USMCA), issues affecting jobs in resource-based industries, telecommunications, the promotion of green jobs, the expansion of critical minerals supply chain, labour laws and Occupational Health and Safety regulation and other issues impacting Steelworkers and their families.

The candidate should have in-depth knowledge of the labour movement and the legislative process. Experience in progressive politics, government, and the industries in which Steelworker members work (i.e., steel, resource extraction, manufacturing, forestry, transportation, telecommunications, and private service sector) is an asset. Education related to public administration, public policy analysis, economics, or related fields will also be considered an asset.

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing briefing notes, materials, letters and submissions
  • Coordinating the presentation or submission of materials to government committees, ministers and other elected representatives, political staff, bureaucrats or regulators
  • Building relationships and liaising with Federations of Labour, provincial political parties, and various other political and other groups with interests similar to the Union’s
  • Following the direction of the District Director, their Assistant, and other Staff of the Union as determined by the District Director
  • Preparing reports or updates on legislative initiatives
  • Supporting member and district campaigns, conducting research, delivering presentations and workshops
  • Monitoring the development of political or legislative activity related to issues important to the Union
