Happy, engaged, active members of United Steelworkers are the best people to spread the word about the benefits of belonging to a union, says the area co-ordinator for USW for northeastern Ontario.
Myles Sullivan has returned to Sudbury in that role after 3 1/2 years working in the union’s District 6 office in Toronto.
He’s glad to be home.
Sullivan, 44, took over the post Jan. 1 from Wess Dowsett, who’s retiring after 25 years with USW.
The time spent in Toronto was an opportunity to see the “reach and the work and the influence USW has on the labour movement, and how much good work our union really does,” said Sullivan.
Of course, he’s biased.
He began working in underground ventilation with the former Falconbridge Ltd. in 1995, becoming a union steward the day after his 45-day probation period was over. He worked his way through the union ranks, becoming a health and safety representative and local unit president.
He became a staff representative with USW in 2007.
