Steelworkers Humanity Fund Contributes $20,000 to Earthquake Relief in Nepal

April 27, 2015

TORONTO – The Steelworkers Humanity Fund is contributing $20,000 to Oxfam Canada to support families and communities recovering from the devastating earthquake in Nepal on April 25.

“We express our condolences and solidarity to the families affected by this earthquake. We are responding to the tragedy with a contribution from the Steelworkers Humanity Fund toward the relief and recovery effort,” said Ken Neumann, President of the Steelworkers Humanity Fund.

Oxfam has ongoing programs in Nepal. For this emergency, Oxfam is providing support for access to clean water and sanitation, as well as distributing essential non-food items such as women’s hygiene and protection needs and basic household items such as blankets, water containers and cooking items. Oxfam will implement a Cash for Work program for debris cleanup, including unconditional grants to very vulnerable people.

Founded in1985, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is a registered charitable organization that focuses primarily on development projects and emergency aid in developing countries, but also supports Canadian communities in crisis. United Steelworkers (USW) members contribute to the fund through clauses negotiated into collective agreements. In some cases employers make matching contributions.
