Steelworkers make great neighbours

The union is a pillar of support for the communities in which our members live and work. Steelworkers contribute to the community in many ways. Take pride in and be inspired by these recent initiatives.

USW 8327 donated T-shirts for tie-dyeing

USW Local 8327, an amalgamated local in Eastern Ontario, donated 400 T-shirts for campers to tie-dye while at Camp Smitty, an overnight summer camp for children from lower-income families.

Operation Backpack redux

The USW’s South Central Ontario Area Council held its inaugural back-to-school backpack event, filling 300 backpacks with school supplies to help students in need start the school year with confidence. The project was inspired by the Hamilton Steelworkers Area Council’s Operation Backpack.

Free hotdog BBQ

Local 7625 in Anjou, Que., partnered with CUPE activists to organize an outdoor barbecue at the Multibar plant, bringing food and fun to workers heading into the plant for their shift.

$35,000 to domestic violence survivors

Women of Steel in Quebec organized teams of Steelworkers to prepare and deliver 500 packages of essentials to shelters supporting those who have experienced domestic and family violence. The group raised nearly $35,000 in donations and sponsorships.

Motorcade supports those with PTSD

USW District 3 and the district’s Veterans of Steel Committee recently revved up its support for The Rolling Barrage. This coast-to-coast motorcycle ride raises awareness and funds for veterans and first responders battling post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

USW and United Way Saskatoon

USW District 3 hosted the United Way Saskatoon & Area Labour Leaders’ Breakfast in September. Saskatoon-area Steelworkers make a significant contribution to the community!
