As the holiday season approaches, many families in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., are experiencing increased financial pressure and uncertainty. To help support the community during this challenging time, United Steelworkers union (USW) locals have once again come together to provide much-needed assistance to local charities and service organizations.
This year, the Steelworkers Humanity Fund is continuing its longstanding tradition of holiday giving by contributing $300,000 to 131 food banks and community organizations across Canada. In Sault Ste. Marie, a donation was presented to the Soup Kitchen and St. Vincent Place.
USW locals in the Sault region are also making a significant contribution of their own. Financial support and essential goods are being provided to a wide range of local agencies, including ARCH, Children’s Aid Society of Algoma, Christmas Cheer, Making a Difference, Pauline’s Place, the Santa Fund, Salvation Army, Sault Area Hospital, Soup Kitchen, St. Vincent Place and Women in Crisis.
Throughout 2025, USW locals donated $236,408.99 to 91 charities and organizations in Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding areas in Northern Ontario. These contributions reflect the union’s deep commitment to strengthening the community and supporting frontline organizations that provide vital services during the winter months.
“This is what solidarity looks like in practice. When our community needs us, Steelworkers step up and support the organizations that support everyone else,” said Kevon Stewart, USW District 6 Director.
USW District 6 Area Co-ordinator Marc Ayoette from Sault Ste. Marie chimes in: “This support makes a real difference for families who need it most. Our locals take pride in stepping up, especially during the holidays.”
Steelworkers from locals 9548, 8748, 2724, 7129, 2251 and others gathered with community partners to present cheques and highlight the collective effort in ensuring families have access to food, shelter and support during the holidays.
