A message from USW District 6 Director Kevon Stewart on the Ontario 2025 election
The 2025 Ontario election has come to an end with no major surprises. Doug Ford’s Progressive Conservative Party maintained its majority, while the Ontario NDP secured second place, once again forming the official Opposition at Queen’s Park.
With the election now behind us, I would like to extend my gratitude to all the Steelworkers who stepped up to support Ontario NDP candidates. We saw Steelworkers participating in this election, knocking on doors, making calls and mobilizing in their communities.
Whether or not the results were what you had hoped for, your efforts matter. Your hard work will pay off in future elections. Seeing Steelworkers take an active role as leaders in their communities is truly inspiring! Thank you for your dedication.
I’d like to take this opportunity to congratulate three incredible Steelworkers – Jamie West (Sudbury), Jeff Burch (Niagara Centre), and Guy Bourgouin (Mushkegowuk—James Bay) – on their re-election. These proud Steelworkers will continue to be strong voices for the working class at Queen’s Park, and we look forward to working with them in the years ahead.
While the results were not what we had hoped for, Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP performed much better than the media and the pollsters were predicting. We have contributed in re-electing some strong incumbents and new MPPs despite the challenging circumstances and the snap election call. These dedicated MPPs have consistently stood with us, fought for workers and advocated for fair wages, good jobs, easier access to unions and will continue to do so in the next four years. We congratulate all those candidates who were successful in winning their seats and thank all of those who came forward to serve the public but ultimately did not win.
Our support for Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP comes from our firm belief that the NDP is truly the only party that advocates for workers. The Ontario NDP have always stood with unions and fought for workers’ rights. We will continue working alongside them to protect jobs and improve conditions for all workers.
We all know this election was unnecessary! It was just another political manoeuvre by Doug Ford that failed to deliver real change. The outcome may feel like more of the same, but that doesn’t mean we stop fighting for a better future.
Once again, thank you for your passion, commitment and tireless efforts. Let’s continue to plan, organize and mobilize so that when the time comes, we are stronger than ever. Together, we will ensure that Steelworkers have an even louder voice and a greater impact in elections to come.
In solidarity,
Kevon Stewart
