The United Steelworkers (USW) District 6 Women of Steel Committee met Oct. 24-25 to review union initiatives aimed at empowering women, advancing equity and addressing workplace challenges. Updates covered the National Women’s Committee, resolutions for the upcoming International Constitutional Convention, recent union conferences and leadership training.
The committee also participated in the Royal LePage Shelter Foundation Night Light Walk, a 3-kilometre event supporting Toronto shelters Nellie’s and the Red Door as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Meeting three times annually, the committee builds engagement, provides workshops and supports community initiatives. “Being involved in the union has opened my eyes to women’s workplace situations and voices that are often go unheard,” said Amanda Slack from Local 1-500, who’s served on the committee for four years.
“Mentorship and education are at the core of what we do,” said Terri Rinta of Local 2020. “Wherever they want to go, the sky is the limit.” Diane Medina from Local 862 added, “In 20 years, I want to see the committee inspiring future leaders and ensuring women’s voices are heard.”
New member Branwen Maden of Local 2699 emphasized the importance of mental health and inclusion: “We need to create spaces where everyone feels included and empowered.” Candance Zinkweg from Local 1998 echoed the benefits of committee work, saying, “It opened my eyes to new perspectives, showing me the value of learning beyond the workplace.”
Co-chair Janet Moffat, a 14-year committee member from Local 9042, said, “We are here to ensure women have a seat at the table. Knowledge is power, and with it, we can uplift and support each other.”
