For United Steelworkers Local 5795, supporting members means supporting the communities they call home.
This summer, the local is demonstrating that commitment by ensuring Labrador City’s annual Family Day celebration, taking place on August 22, continues, providing families with an opportunity to come together, create memories and celebrate their community.
After cuts were made to this year’s Family Day celebration, the United Steelworkers stepped in to help ensure the event could continue. The local has stepped forward to help make the event possible, investing in family activities and entertainment that generations of workers and residents have come to enjoy.
Family Day has long been a highlight for workers, retirees and families across Labrador City, offering a chance to reconnect outside the workplace and celebrate the strong sense of community that defines the region.
For Local 5795, supporting the event reflects the values that have always guided the Steelworkers – solidarity, compassion and giving back.
“Our union is about more than representing members on the job,” said Mike Furlong, President of USW Local 5795. “It’s about supporting our families and strengthening the community we all share. We’re proud to help ensure this tradition continues for everyone to enjoy.”
The initiative highlights the local’s ongoing commitment to making a positive difference beyond the workplace. By investing in Family Day, Local 5795 is helping create a welcoming space where children can laugh, families can connect and neighbours can celebrate together.
USW District 6 Director Kevon Stewart praised the local’s leadership and community spirit.
“Local 5795 has once again demonstrated what it means to be a Steelworker,” said Stewart. “Their commitment to supporting families and investing in their community reflects the values of solidarity and service that define our union. We are incredibly proud of their leadership and dedication.”
As excitement builds for this year’s event, Local 5796 hopes Family Day will bring smiles to hundreds of families and serve as a reminder that strong unions help build strong communities.
