Goderich, Ont. – Members of United Steelworkers (USW) Local 9597-34 have ended their two-week strike, with new wins in their contract.

The Steelworkers members, employed by Logixx Security, provide security at the world’s largest salt mine in Goderich, Ont. With Ontario’s minimum wage scheduled to increase in October, the company’s initial monetary offer would end up being insufficient. This prompted the members hitting the picket line.

The new contract secures a 6.2% increase in year one of the contract and 3.7% increase in year two; improvement in sick time for both full-time and part-time employees; and costs related to renewal of security license, including police clearances and photos will also now be reimbursed under the new contract.

The group also secured new language for leave around Traditional Indigenous Practices, including but not limited to hunting, fishing, harvesting and any practice prescribed by regulation and a voting leave during elections for Indigenous Chief and Council. This is an important step in the path of truth and reconciliation for Indigenous Steelworkers and their families.

In addition, language was also added for members to take a moment of silence at 11th hour on December 6, which is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women.

“While our main issue was our compensation, we were also able to win in other areas of our contract. This is what we strive for each round of negotiations and I’m pleased we were able to reach a contract that our members supported,” said Angela Caldwell, USW Local 9597-34 Unit Steward.
