Steelworkers golf tournament brings community together

August 28, 2025

The bright sunshine was matched only by the spirit of generosity at the Crimson Ridge golf course in Sault Ste. Marie on Aug. 10, as golfers, volunteers and local businesses came together for the 6th annual Steelworkers Charity Golf Tournament.

The event welcomed players of all levels in a four-person scramble, with friendly competitions such as Longest Drive and Closest to the Pin adding excitement throughout the course. What began as a day of golf quickly grew into a celebration of solidarity, community and giving back.

Laughter echoed during the “Shaving Never Felt So Good” contest, where the results ended in a tie. Both Marc Ayotte, USW District 6 Area Co-ordinator, and Bill Slater, USW Local 2724 President, bravely stepped up for a fresh shave. With the skilled touch of Catherine O’Donnell from Catherine’s Hairstyling & Barbershop, the contest raised $7,616.35 and plenty of smiles.

In total, the tournament raised an impressive $27,603.13. The achievement was made possible through the tireless dedication of volunteers who managed everything from early-morning setup to contest co-ordination, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable day for all.

Locals sponsors also played a crucial role in the tournament’s success. Generous contributions from businesses such as Algoma Steel, Tenaris, Gateway Casino Sault Ste. Marie, Boniferro Mill Works and Your Neighbourhood Credit Union helped make the event possible, alongside many others who stepped up to support their community.

Now in its sixth year, the Steelworkers Charity Golf Tournament has grown into a highlight of the community calendar. More than just a day on the greens, it stands as a powerful reminder of what can be accomplished when people come together in the spirit of solidarity, sport and generosity.
