The South Central Ontario Area Council (SCOAC) proudly hosted its first Operation Backpack event at the USW Cambridge office, where 300 backpacks filled with school supplies were packed to help students in need start the school year with confidence.
The initiative was inspired by the Hamilton Area Council’s successful program, which in turn inspired SCOAC to achieve a similar goal: ensuring every child has the tools they need to learn and succeed. Partnering with Send’em Off Smiling and the Upper Grand District School Board, the council prioritized children in Grades 1-8, while respecting families’ privacy and dignity.
Bringing this project to life required months of co-ordination, beginning with council approval, outreach to union locals and employers, and fundraising efforts to cover the cost of supplies. Once the backpacks were ordered and delivered, a group of 19 volunteers – including staff, members and community allies – gathered on Aug. 17 to pack the bags. In just a few hours, the team achieved its 300-backpack goal. The day also included an educational workshop, “Finding Your Voice,” facilitated by Mary Lou Scott, USW Area Co-ordinator for Cambridge and Diane Medina, Vice-President of SCOAC, which encouraged members to reflect on confidence, communication and speaking up in their own lives.
“We were inspired by the Hamilton Area Council and wanted to bring that same spirit of giving to our region,” said Tony Ciaramella, USW Staff Representative. “With the support of locals, employers, and volunteers, we hit our 300-backpack goal and showed what we can accomplish when we stand together.”
For SCOAC President Nadia Crystal, the event was a powerful reflection of solidarity in action.
“Seeing members, locals and employers come together on their own time to support kids in our community was incredible. The energy in the room was uplifting – people were laughing, working side-by-side and even making it fun with a bit of friendly competition. It showed the best of what we can achieve when we work together for families.”
Vice-President Diane Medina added, “Thank you to Tony and Nadia for their support and to all the volunteers who came out. Everyone understands the importance of stepping up for the kids. The teamwork, the energy and the commitment made this initiative a success.”
Operation Backpack is just the beginning for SCOAC. With positive feedback, strong participation and clear community need, organizers are committed to making this an annual tradition that grows year after year.
