Craig Spulnick, of USW Local 6571 in Ontario’s Durham Region, was recently honoured with the Health & Safety Activist Award at the Workers’ Health and Safety Centre’s annual awards dinner.
The recognition celebrates his leadership in advancing health and safety through solidarity, worker empowerment and collaboration on the shop floor.
Spulnick, who serves as the union co-chair of the Health and Safety Committee, is also a union steward, and an Executive Committee member. He has been instrumental in strengthening the local’s safety culture since joining the committee in 2019.
“I really appreciate the recognition, but this award reflects the efforts of our entire committee,” said Spulnick. “We’ve made it a priority to keep communication open and ensure members feel supported in raising safety concerns. Our goal is zero injuries and zero lost time. Everyone deserves to go home safe at the end of the day.”
Spulnick credits the United Steelworkers for giving workers the power, resources and structure to make a meaningful change within their local and community.
“The USW provides a strong voice when it comes to safety,” he said. “It’s empowering to be part of a union that stands up for members and gives us the tools to create safer workplaces.”
USW District 6 Director Kevon Stewart praised Spulnick’s leadership and commitment to workers.
“Craig’s work shows the strength of union power – when members come together, we create safer, fairer and more respectful workplaces for everyone within our union.”
This recognition is a reminder that health and safety are core union values – and that collective action continues to make workplaces across District 6 stronger and safer.
