District 6 Strike Appeal Fund

October 30, 2014

To All District 6 Local Union Presidents and Recording Secretaries
Dear Sisters and Brothers,
Several employers are continuing to take advantage of working people. Employers know that they have the full support of federal and provincial governments in advancing their corporate agenda of driving down our standard of living in exchange for profit. The elected politicians that currently hold the reins of power sit idle on the sidelines while multinational companies continue to dismantle the Canadian dream and our children’s future. The once achievable dream of having a decent job, owning a home, raising a family and retiring in dignity continues to slip away from many Canadians.
In the face of all of this, I am proud of our members who are fighting back.  As of the writing of this letter, our Brothers and Sisters at Commonwealth Veneer, Max Aicher and at Crown Metal Packaging have continued on for yet another year holding the line. They do this not only for themselves but for each and every one of us. They are amazing and strong people who have withstood many months of attacks from their greedy, profit driven employers. These employers, like many others put profits before people. They tend to forget the skills and abilities of all those who have made those businesses what they are. With the stroke of a pen, these employers attempt to wipe out all that has been achieved over many years of collective bargaining.
I want to assure you that our members are strong, courageous and determined to see this fight to the end. In light of that sacrifice, I am calling on every Local in our District to step up in support of these families.  I am calling on your Local and your Area Council to assist our members and their families this holiday season.
A donation to our District 6 Strike Appeal Fund will help support our members and their children through the holiday season. The holiday season is an especially difficult time for our striking members and we want to keep our tradition of giving each striking member and their family a grocery gift card to help them through these tough times.
Please make your cheque payable to:  “United Steelworkers – District 6” and  mark Strike Appeal Fund on the memo line.  Please send to:  United Steelworkers – District 6, Strike Appeal Fund, 300 – 200 Ronson Drive, Etobicoke, ON M9W 5Z9 .
In closing, I want to thank you in advance for your solidarity in support of our striking families.
Yours in solidarity,

Marty Warren
USW District 6 Director
