Condolences on tragic work fatality at northern Ontario gold mine – Steelworkers union statement

December 5, 2022

TORONTO – The following is a statement by Myles Sullivan, USW District 6 Director (Ontario and Atlantic Canada):

The United Steelworkers union (USW) offers condolences on the tragic death of a miner at the Young-Davidson mine, Alomos Gold, on Nov. 29, 2022 near Matachewan, west of Kirkland Lake.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the worker’s family, friends, co-workers and community.

No family should ever have to experience this kind of devastation. This is the second fatality in the mining sector in northern Ontario in the past month. The health and safety of workers should always be paramount in all workplaces.

The USW has an Emergency Response Team (ERT) program that offers free and confidential support and resources to the family, co-workers and the community during this difficult time.

Our trained USW members provide this specialized support during times of crisis, in the event of critical injuries and workplace fatalities. Anyone from the mine and Kirkland Lake community can contact USW District 6 Health, Safety and Environment Co-ordinator Sylvia Boyce for support: 905-741-9830.

The USW cares and is here to provide support to all during this horrific tragedy.
