More than 50,000 union members and allies from across Quebec, including an estimated 500-strong delegation from the United Steelworkers/Syndicat des Métallos, took over the streets of downtown Montreal on Nov. 29 to denounce the Coalition Avenir Québec (CAQ) government’s unprecedented anti-worker/anti-union attacks.
The massive demonstration, under the there brought together unions from all of Quebec’s labour federations, including the Fédération des travailleurs et travailleuses du Québec (FTQ), which counts the Steelworkers as a major affiliate. Quebec’s labour movement affirmed its commitment to fight in the political arena, in the courts and on the street against the CAQ government’s attack on the fundamental rights of workers and their unions.
The CAQ government, floundering in the polls and facing defeat in next year’s Quebec election, is intent on ramming through an anti-democratic, pro-corporate agenda. The CAQ agenda includes legislation aimed at restricting the constitutional right to strike, decimating union finances and limiting the political activism of unions and their ability to represent their members.
Much of the CAQ legislation violates workers rights that are protected by the Quebec and Canadian charters of rights. Steelworkers, the entire Quebec labour movement and their allies are standing together to defeat this anti-workers agenda.
