Paid Apprenticeships and Training

October 7, 2016

We’ve been hearing a lot of questions about what a unionized apprenticeship and training program can bring to the facility.

Here are some facts you should consider:

As of now, Vale-LH does not have a paid apprenticeship or training program. Employees who have trade school certificates will never be able retain or get a red seal if there is no apprenticeship program.

At all other Vale Sites in Canada the union contract (collective agreement) ensures fairness when it comes to apprenticeship and training.

There are articles in the collective agreement for educated tradespeople and/or the order of seniority to be part of the apprenticeship program, as well as a fair pay progression article, depending on a person’s seals/tickets and hours. The unionized apprenticeship programs are about fairness and stopping bias or favouritism.
