With mental health becoming a growing concern in all sectors, the Promoting Mental Health in the Workplace course provided Spring School participants with the tools and resources to advocate for mental health in their locals.
Lynn Losier (Local 9350) said the course opened new doors: “I didn’t realize how many support resources were out there. I feel better equipped to return those resources to my local and help our members.”
The course addressed mental health stigma, legislation, employer obligations, and how to embed language into the collective. It also created space for participants to share personal stories and strategies.
Vishal Khajuria (Local 5296) shared that the course changed how we viewed the issue entirely: “This course helped break stereotypes and made it clear how seriously we need to deal with mental health. It gave me the knowledge and energy to bring these conversations forward, support members and connect them with the right resources.”
Sam Taranto (Local 2251) called it “awe-awakening”: “It was a conversation our union needed. The program wasn’t dry – it was dynamic, thoughtful and deeply needed.”
Facilitator Dan Bertrand (Local 6500) praised the group’s openness: “The willingness to share experiences created meaningful dialogue and real learning.”
Members left with more than knowledge – they were determined to prioritize mental wellness in their workplaces and contracts.
