USW Cares: Women of Steel Run for the Cure

October 6, 2016

When Donna Wingrove, the Chair of USW Local 8782’s Women’s Committee put forward the idea for the local to participate in the CIBC Run for the Cure, it was well received by the executive. Donna got to work right away, and with the help of sister Kim Nanticoke, spearheaded the fundraising efforts.

Randy Graham, Local 8782’s Recording Secretary was also enlisted to be part of the Women of Steel team at the 2016 CIBC Run for the Cure. Randy’s participation was a special one, because as someone who has lost family members to cancer, this cause was a special one to him.

To round up the team, sister Stacy Botting-Campbell joined in. This was also close to Stacy’s heart, because she herself is undergoing chemotherapy in a battle with cancer right now.

The team raised $2,100 to benefit the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation.

Kim and Randy successfully ran 5 km. on the day of the run. Though exempted, Stacy, accompanied by Donna, powered through a kilometer walk in true women of steel fashion!

On Friday, November 4, 2016, USW Local 8782 will also be hosting a fundraiser for Stacy at The Brig in Port Dover. For tickets and info you can contact: Lisa Gightmire 226-931-9432, Tricia McKinlay 519-429-1177 or Shawna Shepherd 519-718-3861.
